Green alleys are a movement to make alleys more sustainable, more welcoming, and literally more “green” by replacing asphalt with grass, creeping plants, urban gardening or plants, rain barrels, green pavement (lattice stone), etc. Combining pleasure and function, these courts or alleyways become common green areas.
Benefits include:
- reduced runoff of rainwater by increasing the percolation of water into the soil;
- prevented or reduced flooding due to storm water or sewer backups;
- Few vehicles passing, therefore reducing noise and air pollution;
- New habitats for insects, animals and fauna;
- Recreational area for neighbor gatherings and children’s activities;
- Increased safety in the area;
- Thermal regulation
The project will be in an alley in Saint-Leonard, where population density is high and where there are a lack of parks and green spaces. This sector of the borough has serious problems with storm water accumulation and urban thermal islands, specifically in the alley we are proposing for the project.
