The Community Resilience Campaign will teach homeowners how they can adapt to the increased frequency and intensity of storms. It will accomplish this by building demonstrations and hosting an event:
Construction of a rain garden at Kennoille Public School – CVC, in partnership with the local Parent Association and Peel District School Board, will design and construct a rain garden at Kenollie Public School (or similar), which is in a flood‐vulnerable area. The rain garden will help to reduce the risk of flooding as well as provide a demonstration site for residents.
Low impact development demonstration sites – The front yards of 2 homes in Alton, ON, will be outfitted with LID technologies. Rain gardens will be built on both sites, which will be complemented by a soak-away pit on one and a permeable pathway on the other. The purpose will be to act as an outreach tool to demonstrate to homeowners how LID can be incorporated into landscapes in an attractive format and at same time allow for the homeowner to address any drainage issues that they may have. A showcase BBQ is planned when they are done.
Street barbecue event – The “Meet the Designer Night Barbecue” will provide an opportunity for residents in flood‐vulnerable areas to get help from CVC’s landscape architects. The architects will assist residents with disconnecting downspouts and design concepts for rain gardens to treat rooftop runoff. These practices have been proven to help reduce basement flooding.
Project update (July 2014)
On May 8 th , CVC and City of Mississauga hosted a LID maintenance and ask a designer street bbq for 15-20 residents in Lakeview. Lakeview has shown volume control up to 29 mm (92 % of annual rain events). At the event, homeowners were provided training on roadside LID swales and plant maintenance and had a one on one consultation with a landscape designer which they received a conceptual LID landscape plan for their home’s landscape. The intent is to have a first of its kind LID lot level and conveyance residential street.
Completed both residential LID landscapes. Pictured below: Alton Residential LID Landscape Demonstration Project.
