Across Canada: Depave Paradise

Depave Paradise is an engaging program that organizes high profile community events in which volunteers remove unwanted pavement and transform the area into healthy green spaces. Learn more about Depave Paradise .

Program objectives and outputs:

  • Reduction of stormwater runoff by 231,000 litres
  • Reduction of stormwater pollution: preventing 59 million milligrams of lead, zinc, phosophorous and other pollutants from entering urban waterways as well as 18.5 million+ faecal colony forming units
  • Engaging communities and raising awareness of stormwater issues
  • Dynamic depave events taking place in 5 communities, involving volunteers (at least 10 per community, with at least 100 person hours contributed per community)
  • At least 250 square meters of pavement removed and replaced with green space

Kingston

Depave Paradise event took place from May 31 – June 1 at Rideau Heights Public school. 96 m2 of asphalt in the courtyard was replaced with gardens, trees, and a sandbox. 350 plants and 10 trees were planted. Local partner: Hearthmakers Energy Cooperative. Photos by Lars Hagberg and Liz Cooper.

Mississauga

Event took place at Russet Homes Housing Cooperative on July 17-19. Derelict basketball courts were depaved (172 m2) to be replaced with native plants and a permeable paving pathway at a later date. Local partner: Ecosource. Photos by Ecosource.

Peterborough

Event took place on June 24-25. 62 m2 of asphalt were removed by volunteers in front of the Brock Street Mission, a homeless shelter, rain barrels were added to collect roof runoff, and a garden of native plants installed. Ottawa
