Freshwater Resources
Background
Our supply of clean, fresh water is decreasing and the demand – due to population growth, increased urbanization and more consumption – is on the rise. Human activities have put pressure on freshwater ecosystems – including rivers, lakes and wetlands – resulting in significant degradation and alteration. Climate change is exacerbating these existing conditions. Freshwater ecosystems perform critical economic functions and contribute to human health and community well-being.
Recommendation
We must enhance freshwater resource management by developing policy that recognizes the impacts of climate change. It is crucial that we increase our knowledge in water availability forecasting, water conservation and in the development of water treatment infrastructure.
