City Infrastructure
Background
Canadian city infrastructure - physical, natural or social - is ailing and requires significant investment to preserve its structural integrity. Climate change hazards impact our cities’ physical structures, operations and business, safety and security as well as our economy. More than one-quarter of Canada’s infrastructure was built between 80 and 100 years ago. Combined with climate change, growing urban populations will intensify demands on aging city infrastructure.
Recommendation
We must prioritize climate change projects, provide an inventory of current adaptation strategies and communicate and train municipal decision makers about the potential actions to build resilience to climate change.
